The differences are mainly in lens design and lens technology, despite both these contact lenses being made for presbyopic users they are not the same. Acuvue Oasys Multifocal was released in the US & Canada in March 2021 and Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia was released in 2009. Acuvue Oasys Multifocal utilizes a more modern lens design called a center-near design whereas Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia utilizes a center-distance design. Center-near design is where the center of the contact lens is used for near viewing and the peripheral part of the contact lens used for distance viewing. Acuvue Oasys for Presbyopia utilizes a center-distance design which is an older technology that utilizes the center for distance viewing and the peripheral for near viewing.

The big deal about Acuvue’s Pupil Optimized Design is that all of our pupils are unique and that also includes how the eyes focus on near or far objects. Light conditions (refraction) and age also play a role in how our eyes focus, so Johnson and Johnson developed a design that optimizes the optical zones that works for the majority of presbyopic people with regards to how unique pupils are, which is one of the biggest factors in visual clarity when it comes to multifocal contacts.

The Hybrid Backside Design was made to have the contact lens sit more stable in your eye despite a lot of movement which gives more consistent and stable visual acuity. The way it works is that the center part of the inner side of the lens is shaped differently than the outer part of the inner side, thus giving a hybrid back design.

Although Acuvue Oasys for Multifocal are FDA approved to sleep in (for 1 week continuously), we do not recommend sleeping in your contacts as the health risk is not worth it. It is one thing to note that the silicone hydrogel contact lens material of this brand that gives a 147Dk/t make it one of the highest in oxygen transmissibility, so it may be tempting to forget about your lenses and sleep in them, but again we advise to take them out and clean them daily with lens solution.
